About our classes:
The Hearing and Speech Agency has been teaching American Sign Language (ASL) since
1988. The method Signing Naturally is a very successful curriculum used across the country, including Gallaudet University.
The Agency's approach to ASL takes students having little or no knowledge of
sign language and teaches them to function in a variety of situations with the
Deaf community.
Signing Naturally is a non-verbal approach to
learning a second language. By avoiding the use of voice in the classroom,
students are encouraged to think in signs rather than first in English, then in
Sign.
The courses emphasize interpersonal communication rather than learning signs
for English words. Students focus on functions of specific everyday
interactions. For example, inviting someone to sit down or telling someone
to do something to more abstract communication such as giving directions or
helping to solve problems. Grammar is learned in the context of these
communication activities. An additional benefit of this non-verbal,
conceptual approach is that students develop cross-cultural awareness of the
Deaf community.
