About the School
The High Road School of Northern Virginia opened its doors in January of 2002, to meet the educational and social-emotional needs of students with emotional and learning disabilities. Our school’s population includes students ranging in age from 8 to 18, as well as providing transitional services to student 18 to 21. All students at the NOVA school, present with a variety of issues, which have impacted their ability to be successful learners, these issues include ADHD, Asperger’s, Depression, and students with behavioral challenges.

The Nova school offers a full academic curriculum based upon current Virginia standards, along with speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and individual and group counseling. All academics are IEP driven, and all IEP goals and objectives are closely monitored, and students are taught in small group and one on one situations.

Student at the NOVA school benefit from a structured program, which provides key elements to success: small classroom size, positive reinforcement, and a sound behavioral management program, which provides for structure and supervision, enabling the students to achieve academic and personal success. The key to our behavior program I to help the student to understand the motivation of their behavior and to then learn proactive coping techniques for the issues, which they face.

Program Description
The High Road School of Northern Virginia is a highly specialized educational setting, fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education, and serving students ranging in age from 7-21. Our students present with several challenges, which have precluded them from a more typical, mainstream educational setting. Many of these challenges include emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and behavioral challenges.

The small, structured environment and low student to teacher ratio, allows students to become academically successful, and the opportunity to build trust and rapport with staff to ensure their competence and confidence in their abilities. Working individually from each student’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan), we offer a full curriculum aligned with all State mandates and Standards, to ensure appropriate alignment with all current testing protocols. Students work individually with direct instruction to ensure that all identified educational gains are made. Each classroom, be it elementary, middle school, or a high school classroom is a self-contained environment, to assist students who may have difficulties with transitions and/or other distractions.

The professional staff at the High Road School of Northern Virginia is comprised of Master’s level teaching staff, social workers and speech therapists. All students receive individual and group counseling to focus on emotional and or behavioral challenges that may stand in the way of success. Integrating counseling services with the educational process addresses the students’ needs in a systematic fashion. The effective behavior management that derives from this integration allows our students to focus and perform to higher academic levels, as well as, achieving a safe and productive learning environment.

The High Road School of Northern Virginia works in conjunction with the student’s base school to transition back to a less restrictive environment when the student shows the readiness for this. Several students have made this transition successfully, and are able to assume a peer leadership role and assist other students who are setting goals for their transition as well. Any transition to a less restrictive environment is an IEP team decision.

We offer prevocational skill building activities to our students ages 14 and older, to help ready them for the world of work. This curriculum involves standard classroom learning in consumer issues, as well as working with machinery here at the school and creating for sale such items as mugs, engraved items, tee-shirts, and posters to name a few. Students treat this as an actual job, signing in and out, taking and filling orders, and ensuring appropriate sales and shipping.

Curriculum
Our curriculum is in strict alignment and adherence to all State and Federal mandates to ensure continuity with Standards of Learning testing protocols.

Student Population
The High Road School of Northern Virginia serves students from throughout the Northern Virginia area. Students are referred from the local school districts via the IEP process and are students who are in need of a more restrictive school setting due to their emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities.

Student Goals
To integrate counseling and emotional well being with special education to meet each student’s individual needs.
To assist all students to achieve the highest level of academic success.
To enhance the educational process by creating a safe, nurturing, supportive, and enriching environment.
To facilitate transitions to a less restrictive environment when determined by the IEP team.
To encourage students to be accountable for their behavior, to gain insight into their behavior, and to begin the process of change, so that they may become productive members of society.
