About
the School
Sierra School South is a Non-Public School that specializes
in serving students with learning disabilities and students
who may have challenges with social, emotional and behavioral
issues. With over a decade of experience of developing new programs
and implementing creative ideas from our staff, we have been
able to be successful with our students. Our professionally
trained staff has been able to work with students who come from
hazardous, unstable environments a well as those who display
risky behaviors, not only in the classroom but also in the community.
Our model is designed to assist students to gain confidence
and competence to change their beliefs about themselves and
to give them the desire to succeed, not only in the classroom
setting, but also at home and in their communities. Academic
success translates into a healthier self-concept and self-image,
which in turn gives the student the confidence to aim for higher
levels of achievement in life. The student learns trust and
is able to feel supported enough to be able to take a risk on
a new learning challenge.
It should be noted that Sierra School South, which is a part
of KIDS I Corporation has been in existence since September
of 2000. In this short time we have been in existence, we have
been able to successfully graduate two students from Sierra
School, in June of 2003. Their academic success has been translated
into a healthier self-esteem and mindset for both students,
which in turn gave the students the confidence to aim for higher
levels of achievement such as graduating from High School and
even college.
Student Success
Story
There is one student in particular that needs to be given praise
for his successes and hurdles he was able to overcome to achieve
his success! ...his name is Ricky. Rickey started Sierra School
South on April 8, 2002. Previously, he had attended numerous
non-public schools as well as attended school in juvenile hall.
Ricky came to Sierra School with numerous fails in most of his
core classes, which prevented him from achieving his graduation
goal in a timely fashion. Rickey was also on probation, which
meant he had to attend school on a daily basis and keep himself
out of trouble with his peers; unfortunately, staff had to constantly
re-direct Ricky when he became disinterested during the course
of the day. He also had challenges completing assignments and/or
homework for school. Ricky, often times left the classroom,
engaging in inappropriate acts (i.e. fighting, use of profanity
towards staff and peers and making improper comments and statements
with others). Rickey continued to get in to fights almost every
other week his first two semesters as a student at Sierra School.
As a result of his court requirement, Ricky was mandated to
participate and complete 20 weeks of anger management training
in counseling sessions at school with his therapist at Sierra
School. He earned a certificate or completion after engaging
in 20 weeks of individualized counseling sessions focusing on
relaxation skills and learning healthy physical outlets to release
his frustrations. He was able to build competence and confidence
within himself to succeed and work towards graduation.
In January of 2003, Ricky became focused on the requirements
needed for graduation in June of 2003 and he did! Ricky received
his High School Diploma from Manual Arts High School in the
class of 2003. Currently, Rickey is working as security Guard
at one or the local malls as well as attending school at Los
Angeles Trade Tech Community College. He is working towards
a Business Administration Degree.
