Welcome to the High
Road Lower School of Prince George’s County
At High Road, we specialize in educating students with emotional/behavioral
difficulties and their related learning problems. From the start,
we have had one overriding mission: To make each student feel
successful in the classroom and the community through academic
achievement and improved self-esteem.
We do this by taking the time to get to know each student so
we can build and educational program and choose a teaching style
that is just right for the individual student. We then help
the student master achievable skills before introducing more
challenging material. As the student builds on classroom successes,
you’ll see those achievements lead to improved confidence
and competence. In this way, we create a positive cycle of learning,
success, and self-worth.
Our new facility, which opened in early 2000, is located in
Hyattsville, MD. We provide services to students ages 7014,
grade 2-8 with the primary disability of serious emotional disturbance,
along with learning disabilities, communication disorders, other
health impairments, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,
and intellectual limitations. In addition to our academic programs,
we offer counseling, speech and language therapy, and occupational
therapy.
Again, welcome to the High Road School. We are pleased to have

Student Success Story
A Gold Star for High Road
The High Road School of Prince George’s county gladly
welcomed Jasmine, age 13, in January of 2002. During the 10
months that Jasmine has spent at High Road, she has exemplified
a true Gold Level student in every way. Her positive and giving
nature radiates light and joy to those who have the pleasure
of working with her.
Like many students at HRSPGC, Jasmine has stood strong in the
face of adversity. She has dealt with her fair share of personal
loss and is living with Spina Bifida, a disorder that affects
her spine. Although she relies on crutches for mobility, Jasmine
never complains at school and focuses on both her academics
and the numerous friendships she has built.
Jasmine is also an emerging reader. She works diligently each
day with her classroom instructors and her speech and language
therapists to enhance her skills. As a true example of success
– Jasmine came to High Road very reluctant to read and
a mere 10 months later is initiating reading in each content
area! Although she is still shy about reading in a group setting,
she brought tears to her teacher’s eyes when she read
an entire paragraph on the Constitution one-on-one. Her teacher,
Ms. Smoak, states, “I will never forget when Jasmine came
to me with her book in hand, sat at my desk, and asked to read
about pet care. I was so happy to see her enjoy reading!”
Jasmine’s mother commented, “I am so proud of Jasmine
since she has been at High Road. She has done a complete turn
around. She used to get physically sick when it came to reading,
now she can pick up every book she sees and start to read. I
want to thank the staff at the school for making her, and me,
very happy!”
Jasmine is an inspiration to all of those who have had less
than favorable experiences early in life. She has taken life’s
curb balls and pitched them back with a smile. Jasmine’s
classroom instructors and all who work with her are extremely
proud of her accomplishments.
