Student Success Story
John is a seventeen-year-old, twelfth grade student at the High Road School of Southern MD. John has attended the school since September 2003; he came to the High Road School from a residential treatment facility, which he attended for approximately three and a half years. John remained in the residential facility for an extended period of time due to frequent absenteeism to school and physically aggressive behaviors such as fighting and threatening others. John has stated and demonstrates that he has difficulties in reading and math; issues which are compounded by his learning disability. He admits that many of his behavioral outbursts were a result of frustration due to his learning disabilities.

Since his arrival at the High Road School, John has made tremendous improvement both academically and behaviorally. Behaviorally, John has had perfect attendance to school this first grading quarter. His not missing a single day of school is remarkable in comparison to his last school placement. As well, John has not displayed a single behavioral outburst in school. John achieved Blue Level within the first few weeks of school, and has maintained that level for over thirty days. We are pleased to state that John is the first student at the school to reach Gold Level, which allows for greater student independence and also service to the school community. Academically, John has also improved greatly. He actively participates in all of his rotations, including tutorials, computer work, and independent assignments. Also, he has made academic progress in all subject areas. John’s reading and math abilities have increased greatly due to 1:1 tutorials and his desire to learn from and interact with his teacher. John is also a member of the school basketball team.

The staff at the High Road School is extremely proud of John. He is a pleasure to have in the classroom and in the school. John is courteous towards and respectful of staff members and his peers. We look forward to continued success with John in school, as he makes daily strides to improve academically and behaviorally.
