To meet every special education student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Goals and to enable every student to make the most of his or her learning opportunities our schools provide various support services, according to assessed needs.

Speech and Language Therapy
Language development plays a decisive role in how a child learns to think, act and solve problems. For that reason, High Road starts with a coordinated and individualized speech program to maximize each eligible student’s speech and language development. Our certified speech pathologists help the student to develop vocabulary and conceptual understanding, and engage in appropriate topical relevant work related pragmatic problem solving skills.

“Your speech program is excellent! We’ve modeled some of our speech programs after it and have started using pragmatics where the speech teachers work with the classroom teachers because High Road was doing it.” – Public Educator

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy helps students with sensory, perceptual and motor problems better meet the daily demand of their environment. Our registered occupational therapists use neurodevelopment treatment activities and sensory integration exercises as the primary modes of treatment. OT is integrated within the transition program to ensure that the eligible students’ needs are complementary to the workplace or vocational experience.

Counseling
School counseling is provided as a mandated related service or at a parent/teacher request. Supportive counseling has the main goal to help students develop age appropriate social and emotional skills to increase classroom functioning. The goal of group counseling is to help build self-esteem and educate students on social topics that they may encounter during school. Career and vocational counseling are also made available to enhance and improve the work related attitudes, responsibilities and motivation. Counseling staff work with teachers and parents to design programs for school and home to promote social and emotional growth. All teachers are trained in crises intervention and behavior management programs, with the goal of minimizing the reliance on counseling and maximizing feelings of self-efficacy and self-management.

Social Skills Training
Becoming an active participant in the community, family and society is a goal we have for all of our students at High Road School. Our social skill programs use activity-based lessons to teach the skills of cooperation, accepting criticism, conflict resolution, anger management, responsibility and independence. The supportive environment at High Road School provides students with a sold foundation in social skills, paving the way for a successful future.

Adaptive Physical Education
All students at High Road School participate in physical education, which we adapt for each child. Our physical education teacher leads students to develop muscle tone, coordination, flexibility, and motor skills. Students also learn teamwork, game rules, cooperation and good sportsmanship.

Psychological Services
Many of the High Road Schools employ psychologists and psychiatrists to provide services on a contractual basis. These individuals can be helpful in diagnosing emotional and behavioral disorders. In the event that medication may be helpful to maintain a student’s behavior the psychological staff can help prescribe medication and monitor the effects on the student. The High Road School neither encourages nor discourages the use of doctor prescribed medications. However, we do wish to inform parents about the various options available in the treatment of children with emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities.
