Throughout the morning, the teaching
staff works with each student to provide direct instruction
in the core academic areas: reading, writing, mathematics,
and language arts. Students participate in a 20 minute
rotation schedule that keeps them focused and actively
engaged with the learning material. Students rotate every
twenty minutes from seatwork, to tutorials, to the computer.
Tutorials give the student the opportunity to work one
on one with the teaching staff. Tutorials make it possible
for the teacher to closely monitor the student’s
academic progress and adjust teaching techniques as necessary.
Seatwork gives the student the opportunity to practice
new skills that they have been introduced to during their
tutorials. Students then go on to a 20 minute session
at the computer where they participate in a customized
lesson based on their individual level and progress.
Afternoon instruction includes science, social studies,
health, art, physical education, technology education,
occupational preparation, work experience and social skills.
Language Arts
An essential tool to help each student continue the process
of life-long learning is reading. Our teachers employ
a variety of reading, spelling, and writing methodologies
to help the student establish this most basic foundation.
Because students with disabilities often have difficulties
in these areas, our teachers work closely with the student
to help him or her decode, comprehend, and construct written
language. As a motivational technique, we encourage students
to select study subjects – favorite authors, special
interests, hobbies – of personal interest to them.
Our teachers incorporate these choices into each student’s
curriculum.
Mathematics
In math the students learn computation skills followed
by problem solving applications. We guide the student
along this skills-application sequence gradually introducing
them to more demanding material. At every age, we emphasize
those math applications particularly important for the
child with special needs, such as time management and
personal finance.
