The High Road Schools provide ESY,
or Extended School Year services. ESY is generally a 30-day
program in the month of July and early August, about two
weeks after the regular school year ends. Many of the
students are recommended for ESY services, though not
all are approved for eligibility. Students are approved
for ESY for a variety of academic, behavioral, and emotional
reasons.
Academically, students are recommended for ESY in order
to earn credits, make up missed work, or to retain learning
that may be lost over a long summer vacation. The consistency
of academic learning is maintained by having students
stay in school when they may otherwise not be studying
over the summer break. Students often show patterns of
regression when out of school for extended periods, the
ESY allows for continued progress and emersion into the
curriculum.
Behaviorally and emotionally students benefit as well
from participating in the ESY program. The consistency
and structure of the program allow for the student to
maintain success and self-discipline that may not be implemented
outside of the school environment. Students adhere to
the same rules and behavioral model in ESY as they do
in the regular school year; this consistency makes the
transition back to school in the fall much easier for
many High Road students.
While not all students participate in the ESY program,
most are recommended by the High Road School teams. As
well as participating in the regular curriculum, students
enjoy a variety of field trips and fun activities to keep
them actively engaged and interested in learning.
