Ellyn Lerner, Ph. D., and David Winikur, Ed. D., created
KIDS 1 inc., to concentrate on those students who are
most challenging to the public schools. As educators in
the public school system, Dr. Lerner and Dr. Winikur experienced
firsthand the need for specialized programs that were
successful for students, cost effective, and easy for
public schools to administer. With these guidelines in
mind they set about designing their program. The result
is KIDS 1 inc., the High Road Schools, High Road Academies
and the Sierra Schools.
The first High Road School was established in New Jersey,
in 1986. Since that time, and to this day, the Company’s
mission and the unique instructional model, developed
by Dr. Lerner and Dr. Winikur, has never wavered. Building
on its success with the most difficult-to-educate students,
the Company currently provides services to over 800 children,
in 26 schools, in five states and the District of Columbia.
